    • Work on Your Keywords

Keywords are important on all kind of webpages. But you have to be a little different while doing keyword research for an e-commerce site as serious money is riding on such projects.

You’ll have to brain storm on ideas depending upon the niche of the e-commerce website. Google Keyword Tools is the best option to check for the targeted keywords for your niche.

You can get a detailed report on the demographics, traffic sources, and other important things on Google Analytics.  Getting these reports will help you to know your customer database better.

    • Make Sure Your Site is Easy to Use

You should design the website keeping in mind: CUSTOMERS. The website should be easy to navigate. If a website is developed using the best of the tools but the customers don’t know where to search for a particular item of their choice, then the design is of no use. Make sure that your customers will buy stuff on your website only if the design is simple.

    • Attractive Content

The content on your website will surely drive traffic from search engines or social media websites depending upon the optimization. But once on the website, the customers should get a thorough knowledge of the product he/she is buying. Make sure to provide the necessary information.

If you want to go ahead one extra step, provide your customers with something more. Let them learn about the product you are selling. If your niche is electronics, provide them with facts about the inventor or what led to the invention of that particular product.

E-commerce is everywhere but if your website provides something which the others aren’t, you have already won the audience in your niche.

Be it a simple business website or a blog or an e-commerce website, on page optimization can not be neglected. On page optimization is the brick and mortar of your business’ visibility in search engines. Make sure that the title tags, meta tags, URLs, ALT attributes, Google’s Rich Snippets, etc. are in place. These will contribute to your visibility on the search engine and give your web pages a very nice exposure on the search results.

    • Social Media Integration for Product Sharing

People these days get news from social media websites as they are on them for most of the time. Now how can we skip such a traffic-rich destination to promote the wonderful products on our site.

Social media sharing has become an integral part of search engine optimization. Some of the quality social medias where your product will get the maximum visibility are Facebook (duh!), Twitter (duh! again), Google Plus (yes, it is getting better), then there are Pinterest, Tumblr, etc which can also be considered.

    • Responding to Reviews and Reputation Management

If you want to see an increase in your sales, make sure your site is an influencing site. The reputation of your site depends on on how you portray it publicly.

Responding to every customer review positively will give you a good reputation. This is considered very positive as people notice that you have an active watch over your site and are very concerned towards your customers. Handling customer queries diplomatically will give you an upperhand for your support.

    • Maintain and Update a Blog Frequently

A blog is a way to let search engine bots and crawlers know that there is activity on your site. Maintaining a blog will help you as well as your customers.

The site will be constantly in the search engine result pages (SERP), giving your site visibility. Updating and reverting to customer comments will help customers to know your team better. The customers are the whole and sole of a e-commerce website, so they should be given utmost priority.

    • Designing an Optimal Website

Remember that all your customers won’t be accessing your site on their computers. There will be people who will access on their tablets, phones, etc. Your website should be designed in such a way that it is optimal for all the devices in the market. The design for all these devices should be easy to navigate as well and should be search engine optimized.

    • Authority Links

Authority links are the food for your website. Your website needs authority links to survive in the ever changing search engine algorithms. Authority links are the only sure way to get your website in the top of the search engine results. Always avoid links from spammy websites.

    • Create Social Media Profiles for Better Visibility

Wow, you’ve gathered most of the SEO tips necessary for starting your own e-commerce site in one place. totally agree with content importance, but will add that today content is not only text – content is also pics and videos – and they should be unique too. Plus Youtube videos can also attract new customers, because properly optimized they can rank really high!

Thanks for the comment, really appreciate it! Although, I haven’t mentioned about the content being in audio visual format, it was implied. But yes, for beginners it would have been a wrong impression that content is always textual. I’ll be more specific in my upcoming posts! Stay tuned! 🙂

Amazing blog! Do you have any hints for aspiring writers?
I’m planning to start my own blog soon but I’m a little lost on everything.

Would you suggest starting with a free platform like WordPress or go for a paid option?
There are so many options out there that I’m completely overwhelmed .. Any recommendations? Thank you!

      Hi Linda,
      Thanks for commenting!
I think a beginner should start with self-hosted WordPress. This is the best option because you learn while gaining knowledge from your mistakes. If you opt for a free platform like Blogger or WordPress.com, you will get all the help needed, but you’ll have to learn everything from scratch when you start hosting your blog on your server.
Most people preach to opt for a free platform first but I don’t. We are humans and we learn from our mistakes only. It will be difficult in the beginning, but once you get a hang of the process you can become the master very soon.
I started blogging on Blogger initially and mastered at it, but the transition from Blogger to self-hosted WordPress was world apart. I had to learn from the scratch which was quite time consuming in the beginning. But I eventually got hang of it.
Hope to see you start your own blog soon!

Hi Chetan, Bumped into your article. Great writing. I guess it highlights all the points very clearly. One questions – What do you mean by Authority Links? How do you generate them and how do they help?

    Thanks – Much appreciated

Authority links are backlinks from sites that are established and have a trust level from other established websites. It is somewhat a subjective concept though. These sites are usually the leading sites in the market like a search engine, government site, educational institution’s site, sometimes even an ecommerce site.
